This building is now a dark, hollow place filled with trash and debris. Its windows are shattered and smeared with dirt. Twisted barbed wire surrounds the once grand 80-acre facility. The company closed in late March of 2006, after 140 years of producing a well known brand of rifles.
During WWI, the company was at its peak, supplying ammunition for the war. 20,000 workers lived in the surrounding neighborhood and would walk to work every day. Each day they would pass underneath an arched entrance of an enormous, welcoming red brick building. Life was good, poor men made decent wages, and the city flourished.
Just look at her now. Construction workers are here almost every day and she's coming down fast.
